THE MORRIGAN - Celtic Goddess of War, Battle, Death, and Witchcraft

A beautiful offering candle scented with a musky and spicy blend of cinnamon, clove buds, and smoky patchouli. Adding these warm aromas to our custom blend of soy and coconut wax, we hand-pour each candle and allow it to cure for a short time before we ship it to you. The Morrigan candles and wax melts are topped with small tumbled obsidian crystals and homegrown and dried red rose petals to the top of your candle to make it the perfect ritual candle.

Comes in a black 8 oz candle tin with a lid. Each is a work of art and no two are made alike as each is handmade intuitively for the customer.

The Morrigan or Mórrígan, also known as Morrígu, is an Irish (Celtic) Goddess associated with battle and destiny, fate, or change. She is seen in the ancient Irish lore and stories to get involved very early on with bringing about major changes, and then foretelling defeat, death, or victory in battles and wars.

Her name is Mór-Ríoghain in Modern Irish or Mórrígan, and this can be translated as 'Great Queen'. Another possibility is that her name means 'Phantom Queen'. She has a strong connection to the Irish Otherworld, especially through her primary sacred site - Uaimh na gCait (the Cave of the Cats), at Cruachán (Rathcroghan) in modern-day County Roscommon, the heart of Connacht in the West of Ireland.

In her war aspect, she may appear as a crow and is known as the Badbh, or as Nemhain, screaming across the battlefield. She incites warriors to fight and can help bring them victory over their enemies, as she does for the Tuatha Dé Danann in Cath Magh Tuireadh (the Battle of Moytura).

The Mórrígan can be seen to represent Sovereignty, particularly as a guardian of Ireland and her people, as well as the Otherworld and its denizens.

Sometimes, this Irish Goddess is given as a Triad of connected deities, called the three Morrígna; though membership of the grouping varies from manuscript to manuscript. Sometimes the trio is said to be the Badbh, Macha, and Nemhain, and other times we see it as the Badbh, Macha, and Anand, which is given as another name for the Mórrígan (Lebor Gabála Érenn).

She is said to be the wife/partner of the Dagda.

Morrigan is one of the great Goddesses of Ireland and is a multifaceted Goddess. She is one as Morrigan and many, a trinity as The Morrigan or the Morrigu. She is a shapeshifter known for being a Goddess of war and battle, the cycle of life and death, and is also associated with wisdom and prophecy, magick, and the land, among other aspects.

To truly gain a more insightful understanding of who Morrigan is, it is important to understand the Celtic culture of that era. The Celts idolized warfare, and women were warriors up until 697 CE, often fighting in battle or helping the wounded. Protecting their families and their land (viewed as female) was a dominant aspect of the Celts' pride and was reflected in the Morrigan.
