ANUBIS - aka ANPU aka INPU Egyptian God of the Dead and the Underworld
This 4 oz candle is a perfect offering for Anubis, which carries a unique musky fragrance of ancient Egyptian papyrus along with linen cloth to represent the mummification process. Together, these fragrances make an exotic and slightly musty fragrance that is excellent for meditation and altars! These are embedded with small tumbled hematite gemstones along with freshly dried cypress leaves.
Anubis is one of the most well-known gods of ancient Egypt. Anubis is the Greek version of his name, the ancient Egyptians knew him as Anpu (or Inpu). Anubis was an extremely ancient deity whose name appears in the oldest mastabas of the Old Kingdom and the Pyramid Texts as a guardian and protector of the dead. Anubis would typically have an ankh at the top of his staff or scepter, to symbolize his power over life and death.
Anubis is the Egyptian god of mummification and the afterlife as well as the patron god of lost souls and the helpless. He is depicted as a black canine, a jackal-dog hybrid with pointed ears, or as a muscular man with the head of a jackal. The color black was chosen for its symbolism, not because Egyptian dogs or jackals were black. Black symbolized the decay of the body as well as the fertile soil of the Nile River Valley which represented regeneration and life. The powerful black canine, then, was the protector of the dead who made sure they received their due rights in burial and stood by them in their life after death to assist their resurrection.
He was originally a god of the underworld but became associated specifically with the embalming process and funeral rites. His name is from the same root as the word for a royal child, “inpu”. However, it is also closely related to the word “inp” which means “to decay”, and one version of his name (Inp or Anp) more closely resembles that word. As a result, it is possible that his name changed slightly once he was adopted as the son of the King, Osiris.
